India go down fighting
Chasing an imposing target
of 293, India
could manage only 288, falling just five runs short of the target, giving a
four run victory to the Aussies. Having won the toss and electing to bat, the
Aussies were in trouble at 6/1. Ponting walked in and along with Paine, built
the innings. Paine departed for 50 and Ponting went on to make 74 and got out
leg before wicket to Jadeja. Man of the match, vice captain Mike Hussey scored
73 which included eight fours and a six. Cameron White also chipped in with 51.
India
had a terrible start to its innings, loosing both openers Sehwag (13) and
Sachin (14). Gambhir (68) top scored for the hosts. All hopes were lost with
the fall of Dhoni’s wicket. Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar added a record 84
runs for the eighth wicket partnership with Bhajji scoring 49 in 31 balls (4x4
and 3x6) and Praveen being unbeaten on 40 from 32 balls (5x4 and 1x6), taking
the score from 201 for 7 to 285. Having to score 9 runs in the last over,
Siddle dismissed Bhajji on the first ball and India finally fell short of the
required target, managing only 288.
