Maqbool Fida Husain a Qatar citizen
With reports of
M.F. Husain being granted the Citizenship of Qatar, many artists in the country
felt the gesture as a national shame. Husain, a world famous painter had
painted many controversial paintings including one that involved Goddess
Saraswati. Many Hindu groups had threatened him after the painting was made public.
Since 2006 Husain was living in Dubai and London. Shubha Mudgal, a singer
voiced that a temporary exile was bad enough for a great artist like Husain, he
being given a Qatar nationality was worse. A few people like Sharmila Tagore
and Shyam Benegal said that despite providing security, one cannot provide
freedom to an artist. Despite security, people could be harmed.
