Stay on HC order
The Supreme Court
on Friday stayed the order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court asking the paramilitary
battalions to be removed from the Osmania University campus. A two judge bench
of the Apex Court comprising Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice T.S. Thakur had
stayed the High Court order with a rider. The bench issued a interim order that
said the paramilitary battalions would be directly under the supervision of the
State Home Secretary. The bench also said that any misbehaviour towards the
students by the police would not be tolerated. The bench did not believe the arguments
of the state that there were extremist elements present in the campus but struck
down the order made by the State High Court. The bench also made it a mandatory
process of the Home Secretary to review the deployment of the paramilitary
forces in the campus on a daily basis. The bench after hearing the matter from
both parties deferred the matter to Tuesday for further hearing.
