India retain No. 1 ranking
India inspired by
Harbhajan Singh’s performance, defeated South Africa by an innings and 54 runs.
Harbhajan took his 24th – 5 wicket hall with Amit Mishra and Ishant
Sharma chipping in with three and two wickets a piece. Starting the final day
on 115/3, India won the match in the penultimate over. Morne Morkel was the
last batsman to be dismissed and became Bhajji’s 5th victim of the
innings. Hashim Amla scored yet another century and remained unbeaten on 123,
taking his tally to 490 runs in two test matches and was dismissed only once in
the entire series. He was adjudged the Best Batsman of the Match, the Man of
the Match for scoring a century in each innings and the Man of the Series for
having an aggregate of 490 runs with an average of 490 as he was dismissed only
once in two test matches. India would remain on top of the ICC Test
Championship table till April and would be crowned the ICC Test Champion by the
ICC. This is the first time since the ICC had issued the ranking systems in
tests that Australia would not be the number 1 test team.
