Review of Chatwal’s award
Bowing to pressure
from all quarters, the Union Home Ministry had said that it would look into the
matter of Sant Singh Chatwal being awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan award.
There were protests throughout the nation alleging Chatwal had criminal cases
pending against him. The ministry told reporters that Chatwal had been given a
clean chit by investigating agencies and had told the Rashtrapati Bhavan the
same. There were reports of criminal cases pending against Chatwal in the
states of Kerala and Delhi. Though many cases were filed against him during
1992-1994 period, the CBI had closed down three cases against him and the court
had discharged him in the remaining cases. The ministry, after receiving many
Right to Information applications on the issue had decided to look into the
matter though no inquiry had been ordered.
